Does anyone else find themselves missing fall? After all it is October but we have had more hot days than cool ones plus I love to watch the leaves change.

Some exciting upcoming programs

So do you ever find yourself bored and needing something to do, well there is always the library because in the month of October we have some fun programs that you should think about attending here@ APL.

To celebrate this year's Teen Read Week theme which is LOL @ your library, we are showing the very funny movie She's the Man starring Amanda Bynes on Tuesday, October 16th from 6-8:30 p.m.

On October 23rd, the monthly TAB meeting meets at 3:30 in the Carnegie Room. Remember this is your chance to help us decide what we can do for you!

Our last program in October is the DDR Tournament which is on Friday, October 26th from 1-5 in the afternoon, so come and test out your mad DDR skills. Thanks to the Friends of the Library for making prizes possible!

Read 'n' Feed with the author Carolyn Meyer

Well, last night's 2007 Read 'n' Feed was a great success and those who attended (thanks to all of you) had a wonderful time and I hope to see you at the next and for those who didn't come, well hope to see you at the next one as well.

Carolyn Meyer was a riot and really had a good time, as she talked mostly about her book: Mary, Bloody Mary but also about her two upcoming books as well. And I promise as soon as they are available APL will be buying them. I can't wait to read the next one which is about Mozart!

Ms. Meyer also complimented all of the Anderson teens that attended saying that we were a very good audience and that she was impressed! Thanks again for showing our visiting author what a wonderful place Anderson is!

Yu-gi-oh! Tournament

Thanks to all the teens who came to play in the Yu-gi-oh! Tournament that we had today. I had a blast meeting all of you and learning a little more about Yu-gi-oh! And a special kudos to my three teen judges: David, Connor and Kevin-you guys rock for guiding me through the tournament process. I hope everyone had fun and hope to see you all at the next one!

I hope you all had a great summer and getting back into the groove of a new school year! In addition to new things at school, I wanted to introduce myself as the new Teen Services Librarian for APL. My name is Staci and I come from the Indianapolis Public Library system and am excited to be here in Anderson serving the teens! Stop into APL and the Information Services desk to say "hi".

I know I have some big shoes to fill because your past Teen Librarian, Beth Meyer, was awesome but don't worry she's filling me in on the likes and dislikes of the Anderson teen population. Although, Beth is no longer at the Main Branch of APL, she didn't go to far-she is the Branch Manager at the Lapel Branch, so if you are out that way, stop in and say "hey"!

Finally, here are 5 random facts about me:

1. My favorite color is blue.
2. My hometown is Monticello, IN aka Indiana Beach where there is more than corn in Indiana.
3. I have one younger brother.
4. One of my favorite authors is Chris Crutcher.
5. I love the TV show Heroes.

Think you can't change the world? Two high school students are doing just that with their online project Dollars for Darfur. Here's a little information from the site:

"The people of Darfur need our help. In Darfur, hundreds of people a day are raped, starved and murdered by the Sudanese armed forces and a Sudanese government-backed militia known as the Janjaweed. At least 400,000 people have died and more than 2 million Darfurians have been left homeless. The United Nations Security Council authorized that peacekeepers be deployed to Darfur, but the Sudanese government has not yet allowed them entry. Meanwhile, the calculated campaign of displacement, starvation, rape, and mass slaughter continues."

Has this ever happened to you? You have a massive paper about the War of 1812 (or some other historical event) and you need information--fast! You turn to your pal, the Internet, and find a ton of stuff from Wikipedia. But hold on there! Is the information you have even correct? More and more, teachers are seeing wrong information taken from the wikipedia entries that students find. Could you be one of them? It's possible...the only way to make sure is to get accurate, authoritative information from credible sources. Credible sources? If you need help finding those, call us at 641.2456 or check us out online! Your grade could be a stake if you don't...

Welcome to the First Annual Teen Tech Week!

The Young Adult Library Services Association is pleased to announce Teen Tech Week, a new celebration aimed at getting teens to use their libraries for the different technologies that are offered there, such as DVDs, databases, audiobooks, electronic games and more. In honor of the first annual Teen Tech Week, the Anderson Public Library and Tutor.com is offering free Live Homework Help and Ask-A-Librarian services for the next two weeks! Imagine getting instant assistance from the comfort of your computer. Check it out and let us know what you think. But hurry: this great deal ends March 17th. Printz Award is an award for a book that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature.This is selected annually by an award committee; up to four honor books may be chosen as well. Name That Tune!

Here's a cool site to check out if you can carry a tune...but can't quite name it. The newest technology at the Nayio studio allows anyone to hum into a PC microphone for ten to fifteen seconds and the website will "name that tune." Don't have the mic? You can always call or email a friendly librarian!

It's almost time for the 150th Great Indiana State Fair! Not only are there giant pumpkins, farm animals, elephant ears and lemon shake-ups, but this year, Rascal Flatts, Kanye West and Kid Rock are planning to perform! We are already in our second full week of the Teen Summer Reading Program and have registered nearly 200 teens! Way to go! ...That April is National Poetry Month? If you are interested in poetry, here are some events you should check out:

Teen Poetry Slam on Tuesday, April 4th at 6:00PM in the Delaware Room. Please bring at least three pieces of original poetry and be ready to compete for cool prizes. If you don't write poetry but like listening to it, make sure you attend--we always need judges and scorekeepers!

Want to get published? Check out the 2006 Claudia Ann Seaman Poetry Award Contest! You must be a student from grades 9-12 attending a public or private school. You could win at chance to be published in a journal--as well as $500!

Great Winter Read!

It is said that Anna (Anastasia) Cayne was born in a thunderstorm. A slightly spooky and complicated high school girl with a penchant for riddles, shortwave radios, Houdini tricks, and ghost stories, Anna spends much of her time writing obituaries for every living person in town. She is unlike anyone the narrator has ever been with, and they make an unlikely, though happy, pair." "A week before Valentine's Day, Anna disappears, leaving behind only a dress placed neatly near a hole in the frozen river, and a string of unanswered questions." Desperate to find her, or at least to comprehend what happened and why, the narrator begins to reconstruct the past five months. And soon the fragments of curious events, intimate conversations, suspicious secrets, and peculiar letters (and the anonymous messages that continue to arrive) coalesce into haunting and surprising revelations that may implicate friends, relatives - or even Anna herself.

Playing in the Snow

The 2006 Winter Olympics are nearly here with the opening ceremony scheduled for tonight! It's estimated that 2 billion people will be watching the ceremonies on television!

Don't forget that Tuesday, February 14th at 6:00PM, we'll be hosting our very special Valentine's Day Open Mic Night. Whether you love it or hate, come enjoy some snacks and fun in the Delaware Room!

SLAM!

Don't forget that Tuesday, February 7th, we are hosting our Teen Poetry Slam at 6:00PM. Never been to a slam? Well, don't worry--it's tons of fun! If you're nervous about performing, come along to participate as a judge or a scorekeeper. It's a great way to meet area teens who are interested in poetry...just like you! See you in the Delaware Room at 6:00PM!!

Mmm...Chocolate

Today we spent an afternoon taste-testing all kinds of confections during Get Crafty! We voted on five different kinds and the winner was Hershey's Limited Edition Dulche de Leche by far! Creamy and sweet, these disappeared fast! Everyone made beautiful roses from candy and chenille stems--even Joe's rather unique flower was pretty! I hope everyone had a good time and I look forward to next Tuesday's Teen Poetry Slam.

It's Groundhog Day!

...and it turns out we're in for six more weeks of winter! You can read the official forecast right out of Gobbler's Knob. Celebrate with us tonight at 6:00PM as we watch the film Groundhog Day in the Delaware Room. Snacks provided by the Friends of the Library.

Valentine's Day is right around the corner, but it's not all roses for everyone...except for us! Com on down Saturday, February 4th, as we sample some chocolate and create roses from Hershey's kisses in the spirit of Cupid.

What's Happening This Week?

Okay, so January is almost over (yikes!) and you are soooo bored, right? Come on down to the Library and let us relieve some of that boredom!

Thursday, February 2nd is Groundhog Day! Come celebrate Punxsutawney Phil with all of us at 6:00PM in the Delaware Room as we watch (what else?) Groundhog Day with Bill Murray and Chris Elliott. It's the story of a cynical, arrogant newscaster who has the worst day of his life...again...and again...and again.

Saturday, February 4th at 2:00PM, we'll be having Roses & Kisses in the Delaware Room. Intrigued? Okay, we'll be creating roses from Hershey's kisses...and eating more than a few ourselves!

A great big thank-you goes out to the teens who helped clean up the Teen Room this afternoon--and to all of you who stop to pick up that piece of paper or push a chair in--we appreciate it like you wouldn't believe! Did you wake up feeling a little off today? Perhaps you have triskaidekaphobia. But fear not...you're in good company! Friday the 13th doesn't happen often; in fact, the most number of times the 13th can fall on a Friday is three. That won't happen again until 2009. Breathe easy...

Tuesday, January 10th at 6:00PM, we are hosting our first Teen Open Mic Night for 2006. This is a change from our usual Monday night programs, but we hope that you can all make it!

Thursday, January 19th at 6:00PM, we are showing War of the Worlds starring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning. This PG-13 film runs about 116 minutes and is based on the sci-fi classic by H. G. Wells. Check it out!

Title to Remember

Need something to read as the weather gets chilly? Try Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. The story? Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. Not for her license -- for turning pretty.
